This UKCP-accredited master’s degree explores the integration of multiple psychotherapeutic models, offering students a transtheoretical foundation for advanced clinical practice. The programme cultivates a deep understanding of diverse therapeutic traditions and fosters the capacity to work flexibly and creatively with a wide range of clients and presenting issues.

Through this transtheoretical lens, students learn to draw from different psychotherapeutic perspectives – humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, and existential – integrating theory and practice in a way that honours the complexity and individuality of each client’s experience. The course encourages critical thinking, adaptability, and a reflective stance that supports ethical, relational, and effective practice.

Course philosophy
The programme promotes synthesis across theoretical orientations, enabling a holistic understanding of human growth and change. It invites students to explore the interplay between mind, body, emotion, and relationship, supporting a coherent and flexible therapeutic approach that is responsive to context and client need.

Teaching and learning
Teaching takes place through weekend seminars, experiential group work, and peer supervision, blending academic study with practice-based learning. Students engage in reflective discussions, experiential exercises, and skills practice, supported by a community of peers and tutors who facilitate both professional and personal development.

As some learning will take place online, students will also need access to a laptop (or equivalent device), internet, and a quiet, private space in order to participate in the live, online learning components of the programme.

Assessment
Students are assessed through a variety of formats, including multimedia portfolios, written assignments, skills observations, professional conversations, presentations, case studies, clinical supervision reports, and a research project undertaken in the final year.

Clinical placement
All students undertake supervised clinical practice within approved placements, gaining real-world experience in therapeutic work. Reflective casework and ongoing supervision are integral to this process, ensuring continuous integration of theory, ethics, and practice.

Career pathways
Graduates are eligible for registration with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and may go on to practise as integrative psychotherapists in private, organisational, or clinical settings. Many graduates also choose to extend their professional expertise through research, supervision training, or further specialisation.

Programme delivery
This is a part-time programme studied over three years. Teaching is delivered in weekend blocks through a blended format combining in-person and online learning. The intake begins in September each year.

Direct entry to this programme has now closed for 2026. For most students, the fastest route into a clinical MSc is to complete Metanoia's Integrative Humanistic Psychotherapy Studies (UKCP Preparatory Year). Taking this route still enables you to finish the full MSc within four years.

  • Entry Requirements:
    • Applicants are normally expected to have successfully completed the Integrative Humanistic Psychotherapy Studies (UKCP preparatory year) or an equivalent qualification.
    • For students whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each component) is required unless you have a prior higher education qualification taught in English. We also offer a supportive process to establish equivalencies in qualifications or experience (APL/APEL). If you do not easily meet our Level 6 Degree requirements, please contact us to discuss options.
  • Location: Blended - in-Person at Metanoia Institute and online.
