MSc Integrative Psychotherapy: a Transactional Analysis approach

This UKCP-accredited master’s degree combines integrative psychotherapy principles with Transactional Analysis (TA), offering a comprehensive and relational approach to understanding human behaviour, communication, and change. The programme provides students with a solid grounding in TA theory and practice within an integrative and humanistic framework, preparing them for clinical practice as professional psychotherapists.

Drawing on both the psychodynamic roots and humanistic philosophy of TA, the course emphasises autonomy, spontaneity, awareness, and relational contracting as central components of effective therapeutic work. Students are encouraged to integrate TA concepts with wider psychological and psychotherapeutic perspectives, fostering flexibility, creativity, and depth in clinical practice.

NB: We are currently revalidating our CTA-accredited Transactional Analysis programme, with the intention of continuing our long-established tradition of delivering excellent, professionally recognised TA training and offering clear progression routes for applicants.

Please keep an eye on our website for updates of the re-validation of the CTA accredited programme.

To find out more, contact Head of Programme Nikki Millard at nikki.millard@metanoia.ac.uk or register for a TA or Direct Entry MSc open event.

Discover what CTA accreditation means in the video below.

Course philosophy
The programme is grounded in the humanistic values that underpin TA, supporting students to develop both professionally and personally through experiential learning, reflective practice, and relational engagement. It views psychotherapy as a collaborative process rooted in awareness, authenticity, and mutual respect, promoting the client’s capacity for growth and autonomy.

Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through weekend intensives that combine experiential group learning, theory-based seminars, and clinical workshops. The blended format allows students to engage both in person and online, balancing academic study with professional and personal development.

Assessment
Students are assessed through a range of methods, including multimedia portfolios, written assignments, presentations, skills observations, professional conversations, case studies, clinical supervision reports, and a final research project.

Clinical placement
Supervised clinical practice forms a central component of the programme. Students undertake placements in approved settings and are supported through supervision, case study work, and reflective journals to ensure integration of theory and practice.

Career pathways
Graduates are eligible to register with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) as integrative psychotherapists and may pursue professional practice in private, organisational, or clinical settings. The qualification also provides a strong foundation for further research, teaching, or advanced clinical training.

Programme delivery
This part-time programme is studied over three years and delivered through weekend intensives in a blended format, combining in-person and online learning. The intake begins in September each year.

Start Your Application

For most students, the fastest route into a clinical MSc is to complete Metanoia’s Integrative Humanistic Psychotherapy Studies (UKCP Preparatory Year). Taking this route still enables you to finish the full MSc within four years.

Direct entry to an MSc is only available to applicants who meet all the following requirements:

  • The candidate has to have taken training or have experience equivalent to the Programme Learning Outcomes of our own UKCP Preparatory Year.
  • The training has to have taken place in the last four academic years prior to commencing Metanoia study i.e. 2022-2023 or more recent.
  • They need to have taken a minimum of 25 hours of personal therapy during the same period.
  • They need to have an academic qualification at QAA Level 6 or higher (or be able to demonstrate being able to work academically at QAA Level 6)
  • The candidate has to be able to secure a letter from a tutor at the training institution of their foundation study confirming they believe they are ready to begin placement. This is a separate document from their academic reference with their contact details stating who did the assessment, when the assessment took place, and within what training organisation this training and assessment take place. They therefore need to sign a proforma which states: 'I verify that, in my professional opinion, the candidate is ready to become a Psychotherapy trainee and begin practice placement.'
NB. The candidate must meet ALL of the criteria identified above otherwise we cannot support their entry onto the MSc and they will instead be welcome to apply to the UKCP Preparatory Year, provided they have a level 5 qualification (or higher) in any subject.
