Course Overview
PCE-CfD is an NHS Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT) approved modality, and this qualification will equip graduates for clinical supervisory practice in the NHS Talking Therapies context.
The course provides opportunities for participants who are licensed PCE-CfD practitioners to develop their PCE ways of thinking, being, and practicing in relation to the supervisory relationship. Emphasis will be placed on developing one’s competencies and unique style of PCE-CfDS practice.
Who is the course for?
-
PCE-CfD licensed practitioners with approx. 6 months post CfD qualifying experience
-
PCE-CfD licensed counsellors, who are interested in, or may also already have, a supervisory role in an IAPT context.
Teaching Methods:
The philosophy of the training programme is Person-Centred Experiential, and the learning style will be based on didactic, experiential and skills-based methods with a strong foundation in the clinical practice of working with counsellors working in the PCE-CfD modality. The ethos of the whole programme is to support the individual learning styles and the emerging needs of participants. They will have opportunities to develop as reflexive practitioners, and to deepen their knowledge of PCE approaches to supervision, philosophically, theoretically and in practice. The programme also includes work-based learning from supervised clinical practice, enabling participants to integrate and apply their knowledge and skills. Clinical supervision will start after module 3. Course participants are responsible for finding their supervisees and establishing meta-supervision to support their supervision practice circumstances.

Michael Mulkerrin - PCE- CfD Tutor /Supervisor /Assessor
I began my exploration of psychological therapies while working with the inmates of several London prisons. I initially trained in CBT based offending behaviour programmes under the aegis of the Forensic Psychology Department.
I went on to study Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis (TA) and Person- Centred Therapy at Wealden Psychology Institute and Bexhill College, achieving a combined Diploma in Integrative Counselling.
I later gained a Diploma in Trauma Therapy from Wealden before qualifying as an EMDR psychotherapist in order to treat trauma and PTSD more effectively. I went on to develop skills in trauma groupwork, training in GTEP with Elan Shapiro.
I have attended residential workshops with Paul Gilbert, the founder of Compassion Focused Therapy (CfT) and find the philosophy and theory fit seamlessly with both my PCE-CfD practice and my work with trauma.
For ten years I worked in the Primary Care Counselling Service, part of IAPT in Hastings and Rother. While there I trained in PCE-CfD and finally found a way of working that seems to fit with how I want to be in the world.
I am passionate about this model and have subsequently become more and more involved with helping Metanoia to support practitioners of PCE-CfD. I offer monthly skills workshops, assess submissions from trainees, deliver CPD days, facilitate the 6-day PCE-CfD training programme and in the summer of 2022 I joined the team delivering the brand new 3-year NHS Psychotherapeutic Counselling training programme (PCE-CfD). My latest role is as a tutor on the Supervision Diploma
I am also employed as a band 8c Trauma Specialist at East Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust treating staff of the local hospitals.
I offer supervision and therapy from my private practice in Hastings where I see people face to face and, because of the post-covid online way of working, I also have clients in far-flung places such as Poland, Canada and Ecuador.
