CPD Session Empathy: Experiencing and Communicating
We will be revisiting empathy as the bedrock of successful therapy. We will explore notions and definitions of empathy, how we feel it, how we communicate it and how it enables the possibility of relating deeply with clients.
Author of Skills in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy, Janet Tolan has worked in counselling since 1979, first as a volunteer, then as a full time counsellor. She qualified in 1984 and completed her supervisor training in 1988 with Brigid Proctor and Francesca Inskipp. Along the way, she worked in teacher training, team development and management development. Her last employed role was as head of the Masters Programme in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Liverpool John Moores University. She is now in private practice, working with individuals, couples, groups and teams.
Sheila Haugh is Director of Studies for the MSc Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy & Applications at Metanoia. She is co-editor of Rogers Therapeutic Conditions Evolution Theory & Practice: Empathy with Tony Merry and The Therapeutic Relationship with Stephan Paul. She has maintains a supervision and clinical practice, both face-to-face and online.
