PGDip: NHS Psychotherapeutic Counselling Programme - Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression Pathway
Applications for this programme are now closed.
This is an NHS-funded three year psychological professions training programme. Successful applicants will be employed by an NHS IAPT service for 2-3 days per week alongside completing a three year professional training in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Foundation year plus a two year PGDip.) 2 days per week.
Faculty Head: Dr. Peter Pearce
We would like to thank all of those who have shown interest in this exciting NEW national pilot, full time, salaried training pathway into the NHS psychotherapeutic counselling workforce.
The application deadline for the last IAPT host services had a closure date of 8th August 2022, so all applications are now closed for this programme. As it is a full, three year pilot training, there will not be a further intake until the three year pilot has been completed and evaluated.
Hopefully, following the evaluation this will become an ongoing route into the NHS psychotherapeutic counselling workforce. The route into these posts has been a joint application process with Metanoia Institute, as education provider, academically pre-shortlisting applications and then each IAPT service that is hosting the salaried position doing their own further shortlisting from these and inviting people to interview. As a potentially historic and innovative route into the profession, this programme has been extremely popular and a high volume of good quality applications have been received.
Thank you to all of those that applied for your support of this new and important training pathway. If you have not been invited to interview by the IAPT host service that you identified during the application process then unfortunately you have been unsuccessful in your application.
We are sorry that you were unsuccessful on this occasion and wishes you all the best with your ongoing professional training,
Course Description:
To help improve access to adult IAPT services for people experiencing common mental health problems, Health Education England (HEE) is piloting a new full time salaried training pathway that will provide trainee Psychotherapeutic Counsellors with advanced conceptual understanding and skills in the practical application of psychotherapeutic counselling and a defined standard of competency in the NICE-recommended Person-Centred Experiential - Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD).
This training aims to:
a. Develop high intensity psychotherapeutic counsellors with the qualities, skills and competences to develop, engage in and sustain strong therapeutic relationships and work effectively with IAPT service users with depression, and their families where appropriate.
b. Develop core psychotherapeutic counselling practitioner competency, including integration of practical competency in PCE-CfD, in line with the needs of service users, families and carers.
c. Ensure clinical practice in accordance with local and national IAPT Service policy, including working to create inclusive and effective services for all.
d. Promote personal and professional development and self-awareness essential to successful psychotherapeutic counselling.
These full time salaried roles will be best suited for applicants that are able to balance a busy work and study schedule.
You will be an employee at an IAPT service but also enrolled for 2 days a week on a Postgraduate Diploma course (3-4 days a week for the first term of year 1 to gain readiness to begin practice).
The course will be delivered as blended learning, including both some in person training at Metanoia Institute in Ealing, West London together with online live input via the zoom platform.
As this is a Postgraduate level diploma, you will also be required to be able to study and write academic material at this level. Applicants must be prepared to study and write assignments outside of protected study time (such as on weekends and after work).
Please ensure that you have read all the information beforehand contained on the entry requirements page before making your application, as there are specific requisites for being able to have your application considered.
