Course Overview:

The PGCertHE in Teaching and Learning in Counselling and Psychotherapy is a pioneering programme and the first dedicated qualification in the UK for teaching and learning within the psychological therapies field. This course focuses on developing effective teaching strategies for counselling and psychotherapy, emphasising a developmental rather than purely training approach. It aims to enhance your ability to facilitate learning in higher education settings and provide a foundation for ongoing professional development through reflective practice.



Aims of the Programme:

The PGCertHE aims to:

  • Foster a community of practice within counselling and psychotherapy education, with an emphasis on collaborative learning, peer support, and feedback.
  • Link teaching with student learning by exploring the connected curriculum and involving students as active partners in their learning journey.
  • Equip participants with the skills to critically evaluate their teaching methods and manage educational experiences effectively.
  • Support new educators in gaining confidence and deepening their understanding of teaching psychological therapies.
  • Provide a framework for the continuous development of participants as effective, creative, and scholarly academic staff in this specialised field.
  • Encourage reflective and evidence-based teaching practices.

 

Modules:

  • Module 1: Promoting Learning in Higher Education (20 Credits/level 7)
  • Module 2: Promoting Learning in Counselling and Psychotherapy (20 Credits/level 7)
  • Module 3: Counselling and Psychotherapy Programme Design and Development (20 Credits/level 7)

 

Teaching Methods:

The programme employs a variety of participative teaching methods, including:

  • Large group discussions
  • Presentation and analysis of case material
  • Small group experiential activities
  • Supervision with experienced FHEA-qualified psychotherapy mentors

Students are required to actively engage in self-study and suggested reading in order to participate in class discussions and develop their own teaching philosophy and practice.

 

Teaching Placements:

Students need to be in a counselling teaching role giving them the necessary 120 hours of teaching contact at HE levels 4-8.

  • Entry Requirements:
    • A UK Level 6 degree (or equivalent).
    • A Metanoia Certificate in Therapeutic Skills or an equivalent Certificate in Counselling qualification (or equivalent). This can be attained anytime up to the start of your programme.
    • Qualified counsellors or psychotherapists to at least Level 5.
  • For students whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each component) is required unless you have a prior higher education qualification taught in English. We also offer a supportive process to establish equivalencies in qualifications or experience (APL/APEL). If you do not easily meet our Level 6 Degree requirements, please contact us to discuss options.
  • Location: Blended Learning
