Teaching Assistants (MSc Person-centred)
ROLE PURPOSE:
Metanoia is committed to the training and development of future tutors and has implemented its Teaching Assistant Programme in support of this initiative. At the heart of Metanoia’s Teaching Assistant programme is the close working relationship with the Primary Tutor with whom the Assistant works. This relationship (whilst not a co-facilitating one as in a peer relationship) needs to be co-operative. Teaching Assistants will respect that the Primary Tutor has full responsibility for the training group and will make final decisions about the group. However, to create a co-operative relationship both the Primary Tutor and the Teaching Assistant will need time to plan and review training weekends and to build and support the trainer/ Teaching Assistant dyad.
Professional Development
The Programme offers professional development in the follow areas:
• Consolidation of theory.
• Preparation towards professional training accreditation.
The opportunity to experience aspects of being a trainer and to enlarge skills as a trainer and supervisor through:
- Modelling from tutors
- Receiving feedback on their work,
- Identifying growing edges and exploring ways forward.
- Co-operative learning.
ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES:
In Supporting the Primary Tutor, the Teaching Assistant will:
• Share their understanding of group process/individual trainees/structure and process of training.
Provide practical support through:
- Checking training rooms are ready
- Managing administration e.g.
- Record of live supervision presentations/small group work
- Papers
- Record outstanding work
- Record individual therapy/supervision arrangements
- Photocopying
- Advising group of relevant information, e.g. date changes, workshops etc.
- Coordinate with visiting trainers.
In addition, the Teaching Assistant will contribute to:
• Teaching theory
•Group process
• Live supervision
• Small groups – supervision
• Evaluation of written work
• Holding continuity in the group by:
- Informing trainers of group process
- Apprising of current issues for individual trainee
- Keeping history of contracts/growing edges
- Being an “oral historian” for the group
- Being a contact point as needed (but being aware of the possibility of polarisation)
- Keeping ongoing brief written feedback of trainees/group in conjunction with Primary Tutor.
EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK
- A key aspect of the Internship Programme is the evaluation of self, the Primary Tutor, other trainers, individual trainees, and other Interns. Interns will be expected to contribute to Trainers’ meetings and to give feedback on the training group and at debrief meetings.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Must be a qualified psychotherapist.
- Eagerness to pursue a career within Higher Education ( Please Note: we cannot guarantee a primary tutor position)
