Philosophy of the TA Department

Metanoia Institute was founded in the early 1980s and was one of the first organisations in the country to offer humanistical oriented professional counselling and psychotherapy training programmes. The Transactional Analysis Department offers training in counselling and psychotherapy, leading to diploma level and academic awards, and also to potential professional registration with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the European Council of Psychotherapy (ECP). These trainings are all validated by Middlesex University. The aim of the Institute and of the TA department is to facilitate excellence in clinical psychotherapy, counselling and research practice through extending knowledge, developing skills, and promoting ethical and safe standards. The educative process of practitioners is seen as life-long and crucial to both individual and professional development.

One of the fundamental beliefs of the Institute is that effective education takes place in an environment that is both supportive and challenging. Tutors and students alike are recognised as adults of worth who bring to this shared task their respective knowledge, experience, skills, values, beliefs and needs. Consequently all courses facilitated by the Institute value the contributions of both the tutors and the students and their contributions jointly form an active part of the educative process throughout training. The variety of courses provides a framework for directed and self-directed activities. Students are encouraged to build upon their existing knowledge and experience, to question and reflect on aspects of their practice, and to integrate theory, research findings and practice in a creative and challenging way.

There is a vision of excellence in clinical practice, which is the foundation of all the educative activities of the Metanoia Institute. Practitioners who work at a high level need to be able to integrate conceptual analysis with a reflexive involvement in their relationship with the person in front of them. The TA training programme seeks to develop clinically competent practitioners who aim to maintain excellence in practice, and who will be open to exploring and challenging practice through research activities, personal reflections, and theoretical explorations. There is a policy of open communication between primary supervisors, tutors, practice managers/placement co-ordinators, and the Head of Department, which supports this goal. In addition, the Institute is committed to a policy of non-discrimination in relation to race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation and disability. Our training courses are open to all applicants provided that the relevant entry requirements are met.
