Gestalt Psychotherapy

Head of Department: Lynda Osborne

This programme offers postgraduate training in Gestalt Psychotherapy leading to a Diploma and/or MSc. It also leads to registration with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

Gestalt Psychotherapy takes a holistic approach, focusing on all aspects of human experience. It pays attention to:

  • Body process.
  • The way a person thinks.
  • Our behaviours.
  • It offers support for emotional expression.
  • The spiritual dimension.

Gestalt Psychotherapy is based on the principles of field theory, dialogic existentialism and phenomenology. Gestaltists believe that human beings have the ability to regulate themselves optimally in their environment but that unfinished business and fixed patterns from the past can impair an individual's ability to be fully in contact with others and sustain a balanced body/mind system. Gestalt therapists actively participate in the therapeutic process, sharing their own genuine responses and reactions in an appropriate and authentic way. This enables the client to raise their awareness of:

  • How they prioritise and meet their needs.
  • That unfinished business from the past may interrupt the process of meeting these needs in a healthy way now.
