Commencing September 2010 and January 2011
The aim of this course is for participants to develop their counselling and interpersonal skills and to develop the capacity to assess their own skills and abilities. The course will be experiential; participants will be encouraged to actively work together to further each other’s learning. It is open to anyone who wants to develop their skills. There are no requirements for any previous training.
At the start of the course we will draw up personal learning contracts and look at group agreements . We will identify what counselling and interpersonal skills actually are as well as our own areas of strength and areas for development. We will also learn how to give and receive feedback and find out the skills needed to begin and develop a therapeutic relationship. We will also consider our abilty to assess ourselves and others.
As the course progresses we will learn about the responding and other skills needed to deepen awareness and understanding and to develop the therapeutic relationship. We will continue to assess and review progress of ourselves and each other. We will ensure that the ethics and context of the therapeutic relationship are considered. We shall also look at similarities and difference and discuss how these impact the therapeutic relationship
Finally, we shall learn how to end a therapeutic relationship and how to evaluate the effectiveness of it.
