Research Clinic

An Evaluation of Gestalt, Integrative, Person Centred and Transactional Analysis Psychotherapies and Counselling

The Research Clinic at Metanoia Counselling and Psychotherapy Service (MCPS) is a development of the long standing in house service.

MCPS Research clinic continues to provide practice placements for students as well as the low cost counselling and psychotherapy service to the public. In addition to this, the research clinic provides ongoing evaluation of humanistic and integrative psychotherapies and counselling approaches in a medium term clinical setting (six months to a year).

The research design aims to integrate features of efficacy and effectiveness studies (Nathan, et al., 2000) in order to achieve optimal methodology for the project. The study replicates features and some of the evaluative methods used by the IAPT initiative (CSIP, 2008) , widening their aims to include Gestalt, Transactional Analysis,Integrative and Person Centred approaches.

The Research clinic design has been used by MCPS at different sites:

A two year research project with the London Borough of Ealing Primary Care Trust. The project took place between October 2008 and October 2010 and evaluated effectiveness of Transactional Analysis and integrative Psychotherapies in GP surgeries

The pilot project at MCPS between January and July 2010, where the design used within the Primary Care sites was tested within the MCPS

The Sutton and Merton IAPT service offers evidence-based psychological therapies as recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and delivers these treatments through a stepped-care model. ‘Stepped care’ means that clients are offered the type of intervention that is best suited to their needs. These interventions include individual CBT, interpersonal, psychodynamic and transactional analysis psychotherapy as well as Transactional Analysis group work.

Public health data demonstrates a significant need for psychological help in Sutton and Merton, and more widely across the country. National statistics show that about one in six people suffer from symptoms of depression or anxiety at any point in time. Despite these high numbers, the service’s recovery rates (as measured via self-report measures completed by clients at each session) compare favourably with those achieved by other IAPT services nationally and our waiting times are among the best in London. The TA department at Metanoia are proud to be involved in the project and as well as providing the transactional analysis interventions outlined above. We are also researching the outcomes of these interventions, so that we can show the effectiveness and versatility of transactional analysis as an approach.
